An extension of its 15-day summer workshop program, funtY 6 is a six month program for children that will take them through the following areas related to theatre:

• Basics of acting – body language and expression
• Voice training – modulation, intonation and expression
• Creative writing

funtY 6 will culminate in a public production funtYpuri - a Chatpata Churmur for Children. The performance dates will be worked
around the academic schedules of the children.

A new feature of funtY 6 will be the introduction of four sessions for the parents of the children attending the class to help the parents to use theatre related exercises when planning activities with their children after the programme is over. theatre Y is looking for people passionate about working with children to be a part of its training team for children's theatre workshops for this summer and beyond. Whether you are a teacher, theatre practitioner, actor or from any background, we are looking for you if you want to teach acting, creative writing and other activities that play a crucial role in a child’s development.

For the past five years theatre Y has been working intensely with children, training them in acting skills, writing and other creative activity through theatre, at various activity centres and schools as well as at its acting studio in Chennai.

We offer short term and long term structured modules in theatre skills. This is a part of our long-term vision to include theatre as part of the school curriculum and an essential component of the child's development.

theatre Y will take you through the course content, structure and the methodology / techniques to teach them and work with children. This will be done through a detailed training program followed by the real-time application at various activity centers, schools and other institutions in the city and outside.

This summer, theatre Y returns with plenty of fun-filled programmes for children.

Kicking off by proudly announcing our brand new programme:

storYlines – a 12-day workshop that introduces children to the world of writing and cartooning. storYlines aims to be the first step towards the concept of ‘Visual Representation’ of an individual’s imagination and fantasy. storYlines will encourage a variety of outputs from the children in the form of:

- Short stories

- Characters

- Cartoon strips

- Comic panels

Our second programme for the summer is the ever popular and favourite…

• WHAT?

A 14 day program, it is an exciting blend of basic acting, voice, story-telling, writing and poetry skills.

The above techniques are taught through solo exercises focusing on the individual, and group activities. Special exercises are included that enhance the process of creative visualization as well.

In short it is SERIOUS FUN!!!

In addition to this, theatre skills go a long way in helping the children in their academics and life in general. Research has proven the positive effect of theatre on children’s physical, emotional, social, and cognitive development.

Specifically speaking, it helps in the development of self confidence, self discipline, trust, empathy, cooperation/collaboration skills, concentration, memory, communication skills, problem solving, physical fitness, social awareness, aesthetic appreciation, and is also an emotional outlet and, most importantly, helps in relaxation.

The focus of our program is also to tap hidden talent and potential in the children. It is not goal oriented in terms of the absence of a specific objective of a production at the end of the 14 days because the learning is limited. However, you will get to enjoy a wonderful showcase of what your child has been working on for the duration of the training.

We are theatre Y, a professional theatre group based in Chennai, established in 2003 by renowned theatre and film personality, Mr. Yog Japee, who has designed the structure of the program.

Yog has extensive experience of working with and training kids. Some of his productions include pantomimes for The Little Theatre like Cleopatra, The Elves and the Shoemaker, Romeo and Julieto in Mexico and productions for premier educational institutions like Stella Maris College and Women’s Christian College. The sessions will be conducted by his team of trainers to ensure that individual and personalized attention will be devoted during each session.

voice one - an indepth 50 - hour program that covers all aspects of voice and language skills training, with an emphasis on bringing out latent strenths to applying voice to relevant media streams.

script writing - dealing with all aspects from idea to execution. the topics covered include : story ideas, one- liners, character creation, story boarding, dialogue writing, narrative and scene structure - study techniques and analysis. Other features include production projects of developed scripts with potential, guest lectures, reviews, tips and techniques by prominent writers.

a new year, a new beginning… following our hugely successful 'realitY' tour to Sri Lanka, theatre Y announces brand new courses in acting, scriptwriting and voice training, all to be conducted at their specialized acting and training space – studYo.  

actor, writer and director yog japee will be introducing specialized courses in scriptwriting, microphone presentation and communication skills, besides which he will be resuming the highly popular training programs act one and voice one. This time around, the coursework has been specially designed to suit the time constraints of the individual.

theatreY performing in Colombo, Sri Lanka!!

theatre Y is proud to announce that we have been invited by the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) to perform our path breaking and critically acclaimed play –' realitY' in – “EXPRESSIONS – the Rhythm of Life” – an evening of entertainment organized to celebrate International Volunteer Day (IVD) 2008 in Colombo, SriLanka on the 10th of December 2008.

International Volunteer Day (IVD) Celebrations 2008 is coordinated by the United Nations Volunteers Programme (UNV). December 5th was proclaimed as International Volunteer Day (IVD) by the United Nations General Assembly in 1985. This event, celebrated annually and globally, brings together national and international volunteers from all walks of life.

This year, the UNV programme is collaborating with other Volunteer-involving agencies in Sri Lanka to present an evening of “Expressions – the Rhythm of Life”. The program will focus on volunteers; their contribution and efforts to make this world a better place; expressions on realities of the present world; and will bring together local volunteer networks, civil society organizations, business community and government to raise awareness on the concept of volunteerism and stimulate thinking on collective ways of overcoming challenges for increased voluntary action and engagement in development and peace building.

theatre Y will be doing extracts from ‘realitY’ and will be collaborating with Ravibandu Vidyapathi – a legendary percussionist from Sri Lanka and his troupe for the finale of the evening. The musical piece is called ‘Okri Jam’ and is conceptualized by Yog Japee and will be performed by Ravibandu Vidyapathi, his troupe and Aditi Gopinathan of theatre Y. ‘Okri Jam’ – extracts from poems written by noted African poet, Ben Okri will be composed into a song set in five ragas in Carnatic style accompanied by percussion improvisations and collaboration with Sri Lankan folk music and singers.

theatre Y is also scheduled to do a full show of ‘realitY’ in association with and for the Rotary Club on the 8th of December, in celebration of IVD. Their schedule includes a theatre workshop for the volunteer organizations under the Rotary Club of Colombo.

The UN General Assembly proclaimed 2001 as the International Year of Volunteers which provided a unique opportunity to showcase the achievements of the millions of volunteers worldwide who devote some time of their lives to serving others, and to encourage more people globally to engage in volunteer activity.

About realitY:

A man confesses that he has ‘stamped out’ countless ‘Hidden Fires’—human lives that are less than human to him, and then finds himself on the receiving end of the same ruthless treatment. A woman anchoring a television programme called ‘Know the Truth’; smiles her way dismissively through a stream of panic-stricken phone calls from viewers reporting violence in their neighbourhoods, refusing to admit that the Government can be wrong in its insistence that the situation is under control. The woman in ‘Points’ uses the fragile flame of a candle to make important points about nationalism, patriotism and more. In ‘Invocation’, the names of ordinary people are used to create a memorial to all those killed by violence through no fault of their own. ‘The Wish’ – a relaxed Sunday morning, a couple at home, a supernatural visitor, a wish offered – to eliminate a substantial number of people in order to make our planet a safer and better place to live in.

Five powerful, hard hitting monologues in which the playwright tackles head-on issues of violence, intolerance of others, narrow concepts of community and nation, each with a twist that lifts it into the realm of real drama. Award-winning playwright Manjula Padmanabhan, in her attempt to come to grips with the violence of these times, excels in this suite of short one-handers which leaves the viewer both shaken and thoughtful.


theatre Y will be doing a re-run of ‘realitY’ on their return from Sri Lanka along with the ‘Okri Jam’. The acting, voice training, personality and communication skills programs that theatre Y conducts for individuals and corporates will commence on their return.
